Merseyside
Merseyside is a county in the North West of England, taking its name from the main river flowing through/round it.
Towns and districts include the city of Liverpool, Birkenhead, Wallasey, St Helens, Southport, Formby, Crosby, Newton Le Willows, Widnes, Rainhill and
Rainford.
The metropolitan boroughs of Liverpool, Knowsley, Sefton, St Helens and the Wirral make up Merseyside. The county is
divided into two parts by the Mersey estuary with the Wirral being situated on the west side of the estuary,
and the rest of the county being situated on the east side of the estuary. The extremes of Merseyside border
Lancashire to the north, Greater Manchester to the east and both parts border Cheshire to the south.
The two parts are linked by the Kingsway and Queensway road tunnels, a railway tunnel (part of the underground rail system operating under Liverpool city centre)
and the Mersey Ferry.
Unlike with most counties it is the norm to refer to being "on Merseyside" as opposed
to "in Merseyside".
